Bio: CHRISTINA MARIA IS RYKKA

But as she began to write her latest set of songs, her music took on a new form. The electric guitars became jagged and distorted, the synthesizers danceable, the vocals simultaneously tuneful and hollering. Bursting with hard-hitting rock arrangements and hook-laden pop melodies (interspersed with the occasional down-tempo number), this is music that carries a slap-you-across-the-face immediacy.

Xavier Rudd

The GLC
Whistler BC
Thursday Nov 15th, 2012
SOLDOUT

Description: When he debuted in 2002 with the album To Let, Xavier Rudd began a journey that would see him become one of the most iconic voices in Australian music, literally and figuratively. With each new album, this journey has wound like a river making its way toward the ocean – twisting and turning, flowing and cascading as it relentlessly pushes forward.

Introducing himself as an artist of both imagination and conscience, To Let was definitive of Rudd’s ability to marry uplifting music with thought-provoking themes and concepts. It was music that, one way or another, made you feel good. With an array of guitars, didgeridoos, stomp boxes and percussion, Xavier Rudd re-introduced a lot of Australians to the sounds and stories of the land’s original owners, while introducing the rest of the world to an entirely new sound altogether.

SHPONGLE  BIO

With over 80 years’ experience collectively Simon Posford and Raja Ram are more than qualified for the exploration into the unclassifiable music frontiers they have ventured into; ‘SHPONGLE’ is a new world of traditional sounds, acoustic guitars, Moroccan drums, Turkish operatic singing, cello, double bass, backing vocals and silver flute blended together with the computer wizardry of Simon Posford’s studio production.

Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen) has long had a reputation as the, ‘Hallucinogenius’ a imitable pioneer in sound experimentation, from his seminal first album, ‘Twisted’ which reached No.28 in the French charts selling over 50,000 copies worldwide, up to his recent Millennium hit, ‘Mi-Loony-Um’ with its up-to-the minute modem melodies. His international fan base has flowered from country-wide to world-wide in the last ten years, since his humble beginnings at Youth’s Butterfly Studios in Brixton, this year alone he has played over 16 sell out gigs around the world, each with a capacity of over 1500 people, in Australia, Israel, New York, Pittursburg, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Moscow, Geneva, Montreal, Tokyo to name just a few. In Tokyo he has received a lot of TV and press coverage for their ambient project, ‘Shpongle’ which has intrigued the Japanese audience with its international blend of traditional world music and modern musical mastery.

Raja Ram, is the innovative sonic co-pilot producing alongside Simon and providing inspirational artwork for the album covers and the website as well as his unmistakable flute solo’s in C Major. A founding member of the band Quintessence in the sixties Raja has many years of band experience in the music industry. Not only a band member but also the creator of TIP Records along with their infamous party sound and energy, he is not only a brilliant flautist but the inspirational man behind the ‘Shpongle’ concept.

Shpongle has been a working project since the release of the first album in 1998 filtered out into the underground in which Twisted Records is so renowned for its dance music, having sold 30,000 copies without any noticeable press coverage Simon and Raja are now ready to hit the world with their unique sound and have been on a mission to express themselves since finishing the album over the winter, Raja has been playing a series of 16 parties in Brazil as well as tours in Japan and Simon playing all across the globe including his recent appearance in Tokyo. Now finally the UK has a chance to catch up on this worldwide phenomena with the forthcoming release of their second album, ‘Tales of the Inexpressible’ with its further explorations into diverse sound production they are ready to unleash the multiversity that is ‘SHPONGLE’.

KIM CHURCHILL

With Special Guest Emily Spiller & Benjalu

WED. JUNE 6th, 2012

FORTUNE SOUND CLUB
147 E Pender Street
Vancouver B.C

DOORS 9:00 pm SHOW 9:30 pm

Kim Churchill has been living and breathing guitar for over a decade. When he plays you can hear the dedication and countless hours of rehearsal and you can’t help but have an appreciation for his talent. When you find out he’s only 20, it puts him in an entirely other league. His flawless guitar technique and his lyrical outlook surpass his age and these skills have allowed his career to blossom. As he continues to launch his career in music, dedication is another characteristic you will not find him lacking.

“As a young artist, now’s the time for me to be busy” Kim enthuses. “You just have to tour your arse off, record heaps and keep pushing every way you can. It’s been a hectic couple of years but its also been lots of fun.”

As a youngster you’d be likely to find Kim practicing guitar whenever possible; even if that meant getting up before sunrise. This enthusiasm and devotion is evident in his recordings and even more so in his live show.

Kim Churchill’s style is unique and explosive, with intricate fingerpicking, percussive beats on the body of the guitar, and two-handed tapping intertwined with an earthy stomp box, powerful harmonica melodies and soulful voice. Though his playing is often complex, his songs have an easy, natural flow that certainly reflect the peace of mind that rolling waves and a rising sun possess. Kim Churchill is a live spectacle and a true virtuoso, but unlike so many others who could be labeled as such, he transmits a vibe of genuine modesty. Perhaps it’s his nomadic life on the road or probably his passion for surfing that keeps him grounded.

“I really try to paint a picture of sounds that complement the lyrics I’ve written”, Kim says.

He started off in 2009 after high school, busking and traveling Australia in a camper to share his music with friends and strangers alike. The same year, he was presented with the National Youth Folk Artist of the year award. After being selected from hundreds of candidates by the Byron Bay Bluesfest busker competition in 2010, Kim has quickly crossed the ranks. He was added not once, but twice on the line-up of the famous festival in 2011, sharing the main stage on the opening night with Xavier Rudd, Michael Franti and Ben Harper and on the closing night with Paul Kelly, Buffy Sainte-Marie and no other than the great Bob Dylan.

“Kim’s my favorite new artist right now” Michael Franti, Interviewing Kim Churchill at the Byron Bay Blues Festival.

Since that humble and impressive start, his work of art have connected him with thousands of people, winning audiences of some of Australia’s biggest festivals including, Woodford Folk Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival and many more. In the last year he has also taken his show to Japan, Canada, the UK and the US.

2011 has seen him booked for shows worldwide including the Woodford Folk festival, SXSW, Memphis International Folk Alliance and Canadian Music Week. After a run in the UK, he headed home to support Michael Franti & Spearhead’s East Coast Tour. His schedule will also take him on a Western Oz tour throughout May and June, a New Caledonian tour on the first week of June and a return back to North America to support his Canadian release (with Indica Records).

CHRISTINA MARIA IS RYKKA!!

Long before she was known as Rykka, the Vancouver-born singer-guitarist was a staple in clubs and cafés around the world, where she performed acoustic sets and honed a quirky folk sound.

VANCOUVER AND WHISTER SHOWS POSTPONED

Keller regrets to announce that his shows this weekend in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia have been postponed. Unfortunately, last minute immigration issues are preventing Keller and crew from making it to the Great White North.  We are as disappointed as you and apologize for the inconvenience.  Keller will be back….we promise.  Stay tuned for information on refunds and rescheduled dates.  Seattle….the show is on for Saturday night.  Come on down, Canucks!

Keller Williams has built a career on his uncanny ability to captivate a packed house-all by himself. He’s been called a “one-man band.” A “solo cult-hero.” “Music’s mad-scientist.” All of which are clever labels for what seems to be an essential truth: On stage, Keller Williams works alone. For over 150 shows a year, Williams has proven himself to be a master of improvisational performance art. In his one-man show, he pads barefoot from guitar to bass to percussion stations, using looping effects-and enough instruments to stock a strip-mall music store-to layer sound atop sound until the stage swirls with a full-blown composition.

While Keller has made liberal use of technology throughout his career, he knows that musicianship is ultimately a human undertaking. With a seemingly unquenchable thirst for all genres of music -reggae, bluegrass, funk, and-who’d-a-thunk-it-hard rock, Keller never disappoints….Don’t miss him this March in BC !!

“Coming straight out of Staten Island via Lagos through Addis Ababa with a pit stop somewhere on the Mississippi, the 11-member Budos Band is one of the hottest instrumental Afro-beat-funk-soulsonic orchestras on the scene today… this young group gets a room hopping wherever it plays. The sweat pours from the stage to the dance floor.”» The Province, April 2009

—————————————————————————————

“The Budos Band is 12 people who all lock into sync with the military precision of James Brown and Fela Kuti’s tightest ’60s and ’70s ensembles. Like those sprawling units, these Daptone recording artists possess an innate feel for the deepest funk rhythms and the most rousing Afrobeat arrangements. Because they use no vocals, the onus is on the Budos Band’s instrumental prowess. This is primal, percussion-heavy music that’ll make your soul sweat.”» The Stranger, April 2009
